Monday November 25, 2013

  • Congratulations to the students who participated in the spelling bee this weekend. I hope you had fun experiencing something new and challenging yourselves. You are all winners to me!

  • Note: With exams on the horizon we will put spelling tests on hold for the rest of the quarter. I encourage students to review the words we have already done so far this year as they will be tested during exams.

  • Spelling tests were marked and returned. Please sign them and make sure to do corrections
  •  We had a pop quiz in Reading today where students were called up to read a page from our Tomas Rivera story. Overall they did quite well. We took some time to practice our language festival performance, learned how to read and make bar graphs in Math, and made a chart to show the similarities and differences between living and nonliving things in Science. In social studies we talked about what the leaders of our countries do for the people and began to look at maps of Taiwan and talk about north, east, south, and west.
  • Homework:
Reading page 46 and 48. Students do NOT need to do page 47.

Thursday November 21, 2013

Hello all,

We had a good Reading class this morning reading our biography about Tomas Rivera. After lunch we reviewed tally charts and pictographs in Math class and I introduced the students to bar graphs. For homework tonight they are asked to do Math Practice pages 25, 26, and 27 which is all practice for these concepts. We enjoyed some silent reading time in the afternoon, practiced our performance for the Language Festival and continued our explorations of living and nonliving things in Science class.

Keep an eye out for art displays at the front of the school showing off grade 1's pet rocks and write ups!

Good morning everyone,

First of all let us wish a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Wilsoni! We all hope you have a happy and special day.

Homework:
For homework tonight, students are asked to write their final draft of My Pet Rock. This should include a colored drawing of them and their Pet Rock doing something together and an explanation of this drawing. These pieces of writing along with their actual rocks will be displayed in front of the school so please remember to write nicely and neatly.

  • There will be no homework tonight. Any students who had corrections for the third draft of their My Pet Rock pieces of writing will be asked to finish and return them tomorrow.

Monday November 18, 2013

  • Today we started a new story, a biography, entitled Tomas Rivera. After reading through the first part we all went outside so that we could have enough room to practice for the Language Festival.

  • We had our spelling test today and they have been graded and returned. Please help students to sign them, do any corrections, and return them tomorrow.
  • In Science class students spent some time exploring outside. They had to find any three artifacts which they then had to classify as living or nonliving by answer questions about the items needs. Please note this will be assigned for homework tonight. Students simply need to answer the questions with a Y (yes) or an N (no).
  • Below are some photos of the students on their Scientific Investigation. =)

  • In Math class this afternoon we did a lesson on Tally Charts. Students came up to the board and marked their answer for which activity they liked best between playing at the beach, jumping rope, and skateboarding. We then counted the tallies and made statements about which activities had the greatest, and least, amount of points.
  • For homework tonight, students are asked to do Math Practice page 24

Thursday November 15, 2013

Good morning,

  • We have an exciting addition to our busy Grade 1 classroom. Alice, a local high school student, will be helping out for a couple of hours on Wednesday afternoons. She is looking for some experience in an English atmosphere and we are happy to have the extra help. Yesterday she helped us make some props for our Language Festival performance. Exciting times!

  • Today I returned the graded math tests. Students are to bring them home and get a parent's signature and return them tomorrow.

  • In Social Studies we continued to talk about good citizenship and offer real examples of what this looks like in our day to day life. It was a great class discussion. We were even able to answer some questions on our Know, Want, Learn chart.

  • We talked more about living and non living things and reflected on our pre-assessment activity from yesterday. Tomorrow we will be going on an investigation outside. Stay tuned!

  • In Reading and Phonics we are wrapping up our Where Food Comes From story and will begin a new on. We also spent some time rehearsing for the Language Festival.

  • Homework
For homework tonight student's are to write the third draft of their My Pet Rock stories. This means that they need to rewrite their second draft, fixing any mistakes, and also add an explanation of a picture that they have thought to draw of them and their rock. I have included an example of this last part below:

I drew a picture of my pet rock and I swimming at the beach. We like to go there on weekends to play in the water....

Wednesday November 13, 2013

What a great day! This morning we played some fun reading comprehension games from our story "Where Does Food Come From?" and then we learned about pronoun verb agreement in language and did an exercise to practice using contractions. After lunch we started a new unit in Science by doing a pre-assessment activity where students were asked to sort pictures into a chart deciding if they were living or non-living. You can see the photos on the previous post. =)

Science Class: Living or Non Living Things Pre-Assessment

11/12/2013

Tuesday November 12, 2013

Hi everyone,

We had a lot of fun this morning and did some good work in our Reading and Language classes. We finished reading our story entitled "Where Does Food Come From?" and filled in the rest of our Know, Want, Learn chart and answered all of the questions we had about food. To follow, we started a writing activity where we write a letter to a friend telling them about one of the foods in our story. The students needed to state the food, write two statements about it, and then ask a question about the main idea (ie. the food). To practice, we wrote a letter together to Ms. Lewandowski on the board.

Dear Ms.Lewandowski,
I ate cheese with my Grade 1 students. Cheese is made from milk. It is yummy. Do you like cheese?

From,
Ms. Fisher

For homework, students need to write their own letter on page 34 of their Journeys Reading practice books. Remember, the food needs to be chosen from the story and the letter must include two statements and one question, in that order.

Monday November 11, 2013

Hi everyone,

We had a great Monday! This morning we practiced our Dr.Seuss story and started to add some actions and read with enthusiasm. We also had our spelling test and they have been marked and returned for signatures and corrections tonight. In Science class we brought out all of the materials that the students have been bringing in over the past week. We touched everything and used our senses to help us classify each material into a natural or human-made group. This afternoon I had the chance to stick all of these things onto our material wall so the students can continue to touch them and become familiar with the similarities and differences between these materials. Our Science class went a little longer than expected and one of our classmates went home sick so I decided to move the Math test to tomorrow afternoon. In Social Studies, we made a Know, Want, Learn chart about good citizens. The questions the students came up with were:
1. What does "citizen" mean?
2. How do we be good citizens?
3. What makes a bad citizen?
We will explore the answers to these questions throughout our second Social Studies unit and add them to the Learn column in our chart.
