Friday December 20, 2013

It's starting to feel a lot like Christmas!

We had a wonderful Christmas Mass this morning. It was really lovely to be all together and sing Christmas carols. What a great way to start the day!

Thank you to everyone who made it out for the Christmas concert. Grade 1 put on another great show! I am so proud of all of you for all the hard work you have done for exams and the extra effort you put in to making a great show today. You are all superstars.

I hope each and every one of you have a fantastic holiday. Spend lots of time with family and friends, rest, laugh, and play. I miss you already! I'll see you all back here on Monday January 6, 2014.

One reminder before we go, Tuesday January 7 will be our second Sports Day at DISK. It will begin at 2:00pm and students must wear their sports day t-shirts, not their P.E. uniforms, to school on that day.

THANK YOU! HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT!

Thursday December 19, 2013

Hi everyone,

  • The gift exchange was a great success. We had a lot of fun and there was a huge level of excitement in the classroom. Thank you so much to everyone for participating.
  • Tomorrow we will have our Christmas Mass beginning at 8:30am so please come to school in your proper school uniform
  •  Our Christmas Assembly will begin at 2:00pm tomorrow afternoon. Everyone is welcome!
  • A note about the girls costumes for tomorrow's performance: We tried them on today and I find them a bit short so I hope that everyone can wear some white or black pantyhose/tights underneath. If you do not have these, then some shorts underneath would be better than nothing. Lastly, if you happen to have extras and don't mind sharing please bring them in, in case others don't have anything. Thank you! =)
  • The money you paid to the class fund at the beginning of the year has gone far, paying for our field trip, costumes, sports day uniforms, books and supplies for the class, and class parties (pizza etc). Thank you very much for that as it is much easier for me to be able to buy all these things when we need them rather than collecting from everyone each time. I would like to ask for 1000 NT from everyone for the second semester of school. I want to replenish our class library over the holidays so the students have some new materials when they come back in January. Please send it at your earliest convenience. If possible put it into an envelope or staple it onto the communication book so it doesn't go missing and I can keep track. THANK YOU!

Wednesday December 18, 2013

Hi everyone,

  • This morning's field trip to the Art Gallery was a great success. Students were well behaved and respectful. They asked thoughtful questions and I absolutely LOVED hearing their interpretations of the art pieces. They are so wise in their own right. =)

  • Those who have not done so already, please bring in your computer and health exams signed by a parent.

  • Tomorrow we will be doing our gift exchange so please be sure to bring in a wrapped gift so that everyone receives a surprise! Remember, the price limit is 200 and the gift should be suitable for a boy or girl.
A very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Alpha from all your friends in Grade 1. Thank you for always being so sweet and for bringing cake for all of us to enjoy this afternoon.

Tuesday December 7, 2013

Hello all,

The students had a busy day today participating in outdoor games, spending time in the computer lab and library and an afternoon Christmas assembly rehearsal.

  • Tomorrow we will be going on our field trip to the art gallery to see the Joan Miro exhibit. Please send students to school in proper school uniforms. Lunch boxes will be served for lunch  but they can bring healthy snacks for the afternoon once we return to school. We will leave for our trip around 9:30am and plan on returning by 2:00pm.
  • Tomorrow morning we will have Christmas Mass rehearsal at 8:30am.
  • We will be doing our Christmas gift exchange on Thursday so please bring a wrapped gift to school by then. The gift should be no more than 200 dollars and suited for a boy or a girl. Thank you!
  • Just a reminder that I will be posting a schedule for parent teacher meetings on Friday. If you would like to meet, please write to me in the communication book this week. Thank you =)
Enjoy the raining evening everyone. I'll see you all tomorrow for our field trip!

Monday December 16, 2013

Hello all,

Welcome back. I hope you all had a relaxing and fun weekend.  Please have students come to school in their regular school uniforms tomorrow and bring along their P.E. uniforms as they will have a lot of outdoor activities throughout the day.

Also, we won't choose names for the gift exchange since some students have already begun bringing in gifts. If everyone could just choose a gift that would be suitable for either a boy or a girl, wrap it, and bring it to school by Thursday, that would be great! We will put them all under our Christmas tree and play a game to choose a gift during our holiday party on Thursday afternoon.

Have a great night!

Art Field Trip 12/18

Hello parents,

We know it has been a busy semester and now that exams are almost over, we would like to encourage the students to take a trip to the Art Gallery to view the Joan Miro exhibition. This is not just an opportunity to take in art and culture, but the students in Grade 5 will mentor and help students in Grade 1. For one Grade 5 student, two Grade 1 students will be assigned to them and they will escort the students through the exhibition and sit with them in the park when we take lunch. This will take place from 9:30am - 2:00pm on December 18th, 2013.

This is a learning experience that gives children collaborative learning experiences that are essential to giving students learning moments. These are fundamental to Catholic schools around the world. The homeroom teachers Ms.Fisher and Mr.Hazell will be accompanied the art teacher, Ms.Mahon, who will identify ideas and images of Miro's art. We believe that arts are fundamental to learning but also that the cultural identities of our children can be shaped by older students who model the identities of students of the Dominican International School, Kaohsiung. We hope you will permit your child to come along. This will be held on a school day, and since there will be no regular classes there will not be any loss of classroom learning.

Students are required to wear their full dress uniform (no PE uniforms) and lunch boxes from our lunch provider will be provided.

Please check the permission slip that was sent home in the communication books today and return to homeroom teachers as soon as possible.

Monday December 9, 2013

First, we want to wish Alan Lin a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY from all of your friends in Grade 1. We are excited to hear about your day yesterday. =)

  • Parent teacher conferences will be taking place after the holidays. Before making a schedule I wanted to ask who would like to come for a meeting. If you would like to schedule a meeting please write to me in the communication book this week. Thank you!

  • Reminder that students have their Christian Living exam during their regularly scheduled class time tomorrow. Please remember to bring extra pencils and erasers so you are prepared to write your tests.
  •  Students have no other homework other than getting ready for their exams.
See you all tomorrow!

Friday December 6, 2013

Happy Friday everyone!

We spent the afternoon being engineers and trying to put together our Christmas tree. It was more difficult than it looked as we realised we were missing an important piece of the base. SO, we called Mr.Hazell to the rescue. I was proud of the students for working together and sharing decorations. Now we have a beautiful, heavily decorated tree. It's starting to feel a lot like Christmas...

Friday Homework: Social Studies
Students are asked to fill in the map of Taiwan. This is meant to be a study exercise to prepare for the Social Studies exam next week. The more color and detail that are added the better. They need only include Taipei, Hualien, Kaohsiung, and Tainan. Please also write North, East, South, and West on the appropriate sides of the island.

Kindness Stars

Here they are, happy as can be. Way to go Kaitlyn and Nathan, we are all very proud of you!

Thursday December 5, 2013

Hi everyone,

Another busy day in Grade 1!

A couple of things to consider for tomorrow:

1. We will be putting up our Christmas tree so if you have any decorations you would like to use please feel free to send them to school tomorrow. Thank you to Andrew and Kaitlyn who have already brought in some beautiful decorations!

2. The students have been asking me about doing a gift exchange. If everyone agrees, we can pick names next week and buy a gift for each other. I would suggest keeping the price limit to 200 NT. If you are opposed to this idea for any reason, please just write to me in the communication book as soon as possible. Otherwise we can plan to exchange gifts during the last week of school before Christmas holidays.

3. We have been working very hard so there is no homework tonight unless student's have not finished yesterday's assigned Math pages. They were:
Page 108 # 10-15
Page 109 # 1-3
Page 110 # 1- 4

***And our biggest, most exciting news of the day is that we have two new Kindness Star's to add to our Wall of Fame. Nathan and Kaitlyn had the most kind actions recently. They received certificates and had their photos taken in front of the wall. Everyone was very happy for them and there was a lot of jovial cheering and clapping taking place at the end of the day. Way to go Grade 1!
Note: The photos I took of our stars didn't save for some reason so I will have to take more tomorrow. Sorry about that!

These are some photos of what goes on in our classroom during Pastoral Care. Enjoy =)

Peter and Huan are playing a GO FISH card game with sight words.

Kaitlyn and Alpha are making beautiful creations out of Play-Doh

Benson, Jeffery, and Yan-Xi are having the most intense game of UNO I have seen in a while.

Jessie and Miya are creating all sorts of things from Play-Doh

Jake and Ayrton are looking up words in the dictionary!

Grace and Marianne build with dominoes =)

Eden and Beryl always have fun making things out of Play-Doh

Shannon is making beautiful Play-Doh jewellry!

Nathan uses his imagination to build with blocks =)

Wilsoni and Andrew make amazing Play-Doh people!

Wednesday December 4, 2013

Hi everyone,

We had a great, busy day today. This morning we did a short practice for the Christmas assembly. Now that all the kids are comfortable with their star status (since their amazing Language Festival performance) they are full of ideas and suggestions for their Christmas encore. We've been having a lot of fun.

In Science we have been learning about living and nonliving things and most recently about the needs of animals. In class today we watched an episode of Planet Earth on Jungles so we could learn a little more about habitats and also talk about how important it is to preserve our forests and jungles since it is home to SO many animals.

We have started to do Math review and the students were very studious today. For those who were not able to finish in class, I would like them to finish

 Homework: Page 108 # 10-15
109 # 1-3
110 # 1-4
This will be due on Friday. They will have tonight and tomorrow night to finish.

In Social Studies we made our own maps of Taiwan. It was great having the kids tell me their favorite spots on the island and for me to share some of my own favorite cities. We completed our maps with North, East, South, West, and symbols for each of the cities we drew. They did a great job and took a lot of pride in their work. Enjoy the photos below. =)

**On Friday I would like to put up a Christmas tree in the classroom together. If anyone has an ornament they would like to bring in please feel free to do so. Thank you for all your support always =)

Tuesday December 3, 2013

Hello all,

Tonight's homework will be Phonics page 62-65. Students have extra homework because they were very disruptive and disrespectful in Father Prudencio's class today. They were allowed to start on their homework during Pastoral Care at the end of the day so whatever was left unfinished will be due tomorrow. We also talked at great length about how important it is to show everybody, including all of  teachers respect.

Page 62 There are a list of words at the bottom of the page. Students need to look and unscramble the words which are listed 1-6.

Page 63 Students must read the statements and decide if they are true or false. If it is true, write Yes. If it is false, write No.

Page 64 Read the words in the box and put the words with a short u into the blue box on the left, and the words with a long u into the box on the right.

Page 65 Read each word and check 'long' if it has a long vowel, or 'short' if it has a short vowel

Monday December 2, 2013

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all had a restful weekend after the busy week we had. I wanted to take the chance to say CONGRATULATIONS to all our students. You did such a wonderful job performing at the Language Festival and I was SO proud of all of you. Thank you for all the hard work you put in. It really showed. You are all stars! And thank you to the parents who were able to make it out and support us.

We had a busy and productive day today. We have started to practice for our upcoming Christmas performance as well as review for exams (major subject exams will take place next Thursday December 12 and Friday December 13).

In Language class this morning we did a lot of practice with pronouns, the BE verb, and regular past tense verbs. Everyone was actively participating and we covered a lot of material.

In Science class we compared and contrasted the needs of animals with those of people by making a Venn diagram and filling it in together. We learned that both people and animals need food, water, air, space, and shelter.

Miss Mahon and I did a joined Art class this afternoon where the students experimented with mixing colors on a page without making a picture. They explored mixing with brushes and even their fingers. We had a great time!

We had a fantastic Social Studies class where we did a mock vote to decide where to hang a decoration in our classroom. The students came up to our voting booth one by one to fill out their ballot and put it in the box. Afterwards we made a tally chart on the board to count our votes. It was a great learning experience.

  • Congratulations to the students who participated in the spelling bee this weekend. I hope you had fun experiencing something new and challenging yourselves. You are all winners to me!

  • Note: With exams on the horizon we will put spelling tests on hold for the rest of the quarter. I encourage students to review the words we have already done so far this year as they will be tested during exams.

  • Spelling tests were marked and returned. Please sign them and make sure to do corrections
  •  We had a pop quiz in Reading today where students were called up to read a page from our Tomas Rivera story. Overall they did quite well. We took some time to practice our language festival performance, learned how to read and make bar graphs in Math, and made a chart to show the similarities and differences between living and nonliving things in Science. In social studies we talked about what the leaders of our countries do for the people and began to look at maps of Taiwan and talk about north, east, south, and west.

Expect to hear some English, Chinese, Japanese, and a few surprises! Language is what brings us together and is the foundation of our world. We will have songs and poems, skits and plays, and maybe even a language lesson or two! We hope to see you there!

Hello all,

We had a good Reading class this morning reading our biography about Tomas Rivera. After lunch we reviewed tally charts and pictographs in Math class and I introduced the students to bar graphs. For homework tonight they are asked to do Math Practice pages 25, 26, and 27 which is all practice for these concepts. We enjoyed some silent reading time in the afternoon, practiced our performance for the Language Festival and continued our explorations of living and nonliving things in Science class.

Keep an eye out for art displays at the front of the school showing off grade 1's pet rocks and write ups!

Good morning everyone,

First of all let us wish a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Wilsoni! We all hope you have a happy and special day.

Homework:
For homework tonight, students are asked to write their final draft of My Pet Rock. This should include a colored drawing of them and their Pet Rock doing something together and an explanation of this drawing. These pieces of writing along with their actual rocks will be displayed in front of the school so please remember to write nicely and neatly.

  • There will be no homework tonight. Any students who had corrections for the third draft of their My Pet Rock pieces of writing will be asked to finish and return them tomorrow.
  • Today was very busy and so I did not have a chance to write in the Communication Books. I will send them home tomorrow.
  • If you haven't already done so, please sign and return the spelling tests as soon as possible.

Below are some photos from our Social Studies class today. We talked about what it means to obey the law. Students are doing a worksheet where they need to recognize people who are following the rules and people who are not obeying them.
