Phonics Exam Review

1st Quarter Phonics Exam Review

Grade 1 students will have their Phonics exam during fourth period on Wednesday October 9, 2013.  For this exam students will be tested on the following concepts:
  • They should be able to recognize and name the vowels and consonants
  • recognize words that have long and short vowels
  • know and be able to write the long and short vowel symbols 
  • listen and write three letter words with short vowels (recognizing the short vowel sounds, example, cat, bed, van)
  • be able to decipher between short vowel sounds (bed, bod, bad, bid)
  • know the reading rules for long and short vowels
    • ie. if a word has 1 vowel, it is usually short. Example, bed
    • if 2 vowels are next to each other, the first vowel is long, read
    • if a word has a vowel, consonant, and then e, the first vowel is long. Example, rode
